Founding Fathers & Madeira 250

During the era of the American Revolution and the fight for independence, Portuguese Madeira wine was one of the most popular and symbolic drinks in the colonies. Imported from the Portuguese island of Madeira, the fortified wine could survive long sea voyages without spoiling, making it a favorite among merchants and wealthy colonists. It was commonly served at important political gatherings, celebrations, and even the signing of major documents. Many of the Founding Fathers, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin, were known to enjoy Madeira, and it became associated with patriotism and the emerging American identity. Its popularity reflected both the colonies’ growing trade relationships outside of Britain and the spirit of independence that defined the period.
