The Rooster of Barcelos
The story of the Rooster of Barcelos (Portuguese: Galo de Barcelos) is one of Portugal’s most famous legends, blending faith, justice, and a bit of the miraculous.
Long ago, in the town of Barcelos, a pilgrim was traveling toward Santiago de Compostela. While passing through Barcelos, he was wrongly accused of stealing silver and sentenced to death by hanging.
The pilgrim insisted he was innocent and asked to speak to the judge. When brought before him, the judge was about to eat a roasted rooster. The pilgrim pointed to the bird and declared: “If I am innocent, that rooster will crow when I am hanged.” The judge dismissed the claim—but kept the rooster on his plate.
